Practice Questions
Concept Explanation
When values have different weights (importance or frequency), use the weighted average:
Weighted average = Σ (weight × value) / Σ weights
Key Idea
- Heavier weights pull the average toward that value.
- If all weights are equal, weighted average equals the simple average.
Example
Test 1: 40 marks, score 70 (weight 3). Test 2: 60 marks, score 80 (weight 2). Weighted average = (3×70 + 2×80)/(3+2) = 74.
-
Q1 Medium
A student scores 70 in a 40-mark test (weight 3) and 80 in a 60-mark test (weight 2). Weighted average is:
Explanation(3×70 + 2×80)/5 = (210 + 160)/5 = 74. -
Q2 Easy
10 kg rice at Rs. 20/kg is mixed with 15 kg at Rs. 30/kg. Average price per kg is:
Explanation(200 + 450)/25 = Rs. 26 per kg. -
Q3 Medium
Class A has 30 students with average 60. Class B has 20 students with average 75. Combined average is:
Explanation(1800 + 1500)/50 = 66. -
Q4 Medium
Maths (4 credits) score 80, English (3 credits) score 70, Science (3 credits) score 90. Weighted average is:
Explanation(320 + 210 + 270)/10 = 80. -
Q5 Hard
An alloy has 2 parts copper (density 8) and 3 parts zinc (density 6). Average density is:
Explanation(2×8 + 3×6)/5 = (16 + 18)/5 = 6.8. -
Q6 Easy
A student scores 72 and 84 in two equal 50-mark tests. Weighted average is:
ExplanationEqual weights: (72 + 84)/2 = 78. -
Q7 Hard
Rs. 5,000 at 8% and Rs. 10,000 at 12% are invested. Weighted average rate is:
Explanation(5000×8 + 10000×12)/15000 = 10.67% (approx).
-
Q8 Easy
4 apples of 60 g and 6 apples of 80 g. Average weight per apple is:
Explanation(240 + 480)/10 = 72 g. -
Q9 Medium
Section I: 40 students, average 55. Section II: 60 students, average 65. Combined average is:
Explanation(2200 + 3900)/100 = 61. -
Q10 Medium
20 L milk at Rs. 24/L mixed with 30 L at Rs. 30/L. Average price is:
Explanation(480 + 900)/50 = Rs. 27.6 per litre. -
Q11 Easy
Weighted average of 30 (weight 2) and 45 (weight 3) is:
Explanation(60 + 135)/5 = 39. -
Q12 Easy
Two values 25 and 35 with equal weights have weighted average:
ExplanationEqual weights give simple average = 30. -
Q13 Medium
Group A: 15 members, average 48. Group B: 25 members, average 52. Combined average is:
Explanation(720 + 1300)/40 = 50.5. -
Q14 Easy
3 kg at Rs. 40/kg and 7 kg at Rs. 60/kg. Average cost per kg is:
Explanation(120 + 420)/10 = Rs. 54 per kg.
