Practice Questions
Concept Explanation
The mean price (average price per unit) of a mixture is the total cost divided by total quantity. It always lies between the two component prices.
Key Formulas
- Mean price m = (C1Q1 + C2Q2) / (Q1 + Q2)
- For n ingredients: m = ฮฃ(CiQi) / ฮฃQi
- m is closer to the price of the ingredient taken in larger quantity
Example
5 kg at Rs. 12/kg and 15 kg at Rs. 20/kg. Mean = (60 + 300)/20 = Rs. 18/kg.
Common Trap
Mean price is a weighted average, not the midpoint of the two prices unless quantities are equal.
-
Q1 Easy
5 kg at Rs. 12/kg and 15 kg at Rs. 20/kg. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (60 + 300)/20 = Rs. 18/kg. -
Q2 Easy
Mean of Rs. 10/kg and Rs. 30/kg with equal quantities is:
ExplanationEqual qty: mean = (10 + 30)/2 = Rs. 20/kg. -
Q3 Medium
24 kg at Rs. 15/kg and 6 kg at Rs. 35/kg. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (360 + 210)/30 = Rs. 19/kg. -
Q4 Medium
3 kg at Rs. 80/kg, 2 kg at Rs. 120/kg. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (240 + 240)/5 = Rs. 96/kg. -
Q5 Easy
Mean price must lie between component prices. Rs. 25 and Rs. 45 give mean:
ExplanationMean must be between 25 and 45. Only Rs. 35 qualifies. -
Q6 Medium
10 kg at Rs. 50/kg and 40 kg at Rs. 65/kg. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (500 + 2600)/50 = Rs. 62/kg. -
Q7 Easy
7 L at Rs. 6/L and 3 L at Rs. 16/L. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (42 + 48)/10 = Rs. 9/L.
-
Q8 Hard
Mean of Rs. 18/kg and Rs. 42/kg is Rs. 30/kg. Ratio of quantities is:
ExplanationEqual distance from each price: (42โ30):(30โ18) = 12:12 = 1:1. -
Q9 Medium
18 kg at Rs. 22/kg and 12 kg at Rs. 28/kg. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (396 + 336)/30 = Rs. 24.4/kg. -
Q10 Easy
1 kg at Rs. 100/kg and 9 kg at Rs. 60/kg. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (100 + 540)/10 = Rs. 64/kg. -
Q11 Easy
Mean price of 2 kg at Rs. 45 and 3 kg at Rs. 60 is:
ExplanationMean = (90 + 180)/5 = Rs. 54/kg. -
Q12 Medium
16 L at Rs. 5/L and 4 L at Rs. 25/L. Mean price is:
ExplanationMean = (80 + 100)/20 = Rs. 9/L. -
Q13 Hard
Which pair gives mean Rs. 26/kg?
ExplanationOption B: (440 + 340)/30 = Rs. 26/kg. -
Q14 Easy
Total 50 kg at mean Rs. 24/kg costs:
ExplanationTotal cost = 50 ร 24 = Rs. 1200.
-
DS1 Easy
What is the mean price per kg?
Statement I5 kg at Rs. 12/kg and 15 kg at Rs. 20/kg are mixed.
Statement IITotal 20 kg costs Rs. 360.
ExplanationEach gives mean = 360/20 = Rs. 18/kg. -
DS2 Easy
Is the mean price Rs. 20/kg?
Statement IEqual quantities at Rs. 10/kg and Rs. 30/kg are mixed.
Statement II10 kg at Rs. 10/kg and 10 kg at Rs. 30/kg are mixed.
ExplanationEach gives mean = Rs. 20/kg.
-
DS3 Medium
Is mean price greater than Rs. 25/kg?
Statement I24 kg at Rs. 15/kg and 6 kg at Rs. 35/kg are mixed.
Statement II1 kg at Rs. 100/kg and 9 kg at Rs. 60/kg are mixed.
ExplanationI gives Rs. 19/kg, not above 25. II alone gives Rs. 64/kg > 25. -
DS4 Easy
What is the total cost?
Statement IMean price is Rs. 24/kg.
Statement IITotal quantity is 50 kg.
ExplanationNeed both: total cost = 50 ร 24 = Rs. 1200.
