Concept Explanation

A quadratic equation has the form ax² + bx + c = 0 (a ≠ 0). Solutions are called roots.

Methods

  • Factorization: Write as (px + q)(rx + s) = 0.
  • Quadratic formula: x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a
  • Discriminant D = b² − 4ac: D > 0 two real roots; D = 0 one repeated root; D < 0 no real roots.

Example

x² − 5x + 6 = 0 ⇒ (x − 2)(x − 3) = 0 ⇒ x = 2 or x = 3.

Common Trap

Always set the equation to zero before factorizing. Sign errors in middle term split are frequent.
