Practice Questions
Concept Explanation
Train problems add the length of the train (and often a platform or another train) to the distance covered while crossing.
Key Formulas
- Crossing a pole: time = Length of train / Speed
- Crossing a platform: time = (Train length + Platform length) / Speed
- Two trains crossing (opposite): time = (L1 + L2) / Relative speed
- Convert km/h to m/s: multiply by 5/18
Example
A 150 m train at 54 km/h (= 15 m/s) crosses a pole in 150/15 = 10 seconds.
Common Trap
For platform or train crossing, include both lengths in the distance. Use m/s with metres.

Q1 Easy
A train 150 m long is running at 54 km/h. How many seconds will it take to cross a stationary pole?
Explanation54 km/h = 15 m/s. Time = 150 ÷ 15 = 10 s. -
Q2 Medium
A train 180 m long running at 72 km/h crosses a platform 220 m long. How long does the train take to completely cross the platform?
Explanation72 km/h = 20 m/s. Time = (180 + 220) ÷ 20 = 20 s. -
Q3 Hard
Two trains 120 m and 180 m long run toward each other, each at 54 km/h. How many seconds do they take to completely cross each other?
ExplanationRelative speed = 108 km/h = 30 m/s. Time = 300 ÷ 30 = 10 s. -
Q4 Easy
A train 200 m long moves at 90 km/h. How many seconds will it take to pass a stationary pole?
Explanation90 km/h = 25 m/s. Time = 200 ÷ 25 = 8 s. -
Q5 Medium
A train 100 m long running at 36 km/h crosses a platform 200 m long. How long will the train take to completely clear the platform?
Explanation36 km/h = 10 m/s. Time = (100 + 200) ÷ 10 = 30 s. -
Q6 Hard
Two trains 160 m and 240 m long move toward each other at 50 km/h and 70 km/h respectively. How many seconds do they take to completely cross each other?
ExplanationRelative speed = 120 km/h = 33.33 m/s. Time = 400 ÷ 33.33 = 12 s. -
Q7 Easy
A train 240 m long is moving at 18 m/s. How many seconds will it take to cross a stationary pole?
ExplanationTime = 240 ÷ 18 = 13.33 s ≈ 13 s.
-
Q8 Hard
A train 300 m long running at 108 km/h crosses a bridge 400 m long. How long does the train take to completely cross the bridge?
Explanation108 km/h = 30 m/s. Time = (300 + 400) ÷ 30 = 23.33 s. -
Q9 Hard
Two trains move in the same direction at 36 km/h and 54 km/h respectively. The faster train is 150 m behind the slower one. How many seconds will the faster train take to overtake the slower train completely?
ExplanationRelative speed = 18 km/h = 5 m/s. Time = 150 ÷ 5 = 30 s. -
Q10 Medium
A train 120 m long is running at 45 km/h. How many seconds will it take to cross a stationary pole?
Explanation45 km/h = 12.5 m/s. Time = 120 ÷ 12.5 = 9.6 s. -
Q11 Medium
Two trains 100 m and 200 m long run toward each other, each at 36 km/h. How many seconds do they take to completely cross each other?
ExplanationRelative speed = 72 km/h = 20 m/s. Time = 300 ÷ 20 = 15 s. -
Q12 Medium
A train 250 m long running at 75 km/h crosses a platform 350 m long. How long does the train take to completely cross the platform?
Explanation75 km/h ≈ 20.83 m/s. Time = 600 ÷ 20.83 ≈ 28.8 s ≈ 28 s. -
Q13 Easy
A train 180 m long is running at 54 km/h. How many seconds will it take to pass a man standing on the platform?
ExplanationPassing a stationary man is equivalent to crossing a pole. 54 km/h = 15 m/s. Time = 180 ÷ 15 = 12 s. -
Q14 Hard
Two trains 200 m and 300 m long move toward each other at 60 km/h and 90 km/h respectively. How many seconds do they take to completely cross each other?
ExplanationRelative speed = 150 km/h = 41.67 m/s. Time = 500 ÷ 41.67 = 12 s.
-
DS1 Easy
How many seconds will the train take to cross a stationary pole?
Statement IThe length of the train is 150 m.
Statement IIThe speed of the train is 54 km/h.
ExplanationBoth the train length and speed are needed: 150 ÷ 15 = 10 s. -
DS2 Medium
How many seconds will the train take to completely cross the platform?
Statement IThe train is 180 m long and runs at 72 km/h.
Statement IIThe platform is 220 m long.
ExplanationTrain length, platform length, and speed are all needed: (180 + 220) ÷ 20 = 20 s.
-
DS3 Hard
How many seconds will the two trains take to completely cross each other?
Statement IThe lengths of the two trains are 120 m and 180 m respectively.
Statement IIBoth trains move toward each other at 54 km/h each.
ExplanationBoth train lengths and relative speed are needed: 300 ÷ 30 = 10 s. -
DS4 Easy
Is the time taken to cross the platform greater than 20 seconds?
Statement IA train 300 m long at 36 km/h crosses a platform 300 m long.
Statement IIThe total distance to be covered is 600 m at a speed of 10 m/s.
ExplanationEach statement alone gives time = 600 ÷ 10 = 60 s, which is greater than 20 s.
